China still has a lot of oil and natural gas resources to be discovered?

Economic Observer Network reporter Li Zichen said,"At present,China's oil and natural gas discoveries account for only 30%and 15%of China's total resources, and there are still a lot of resources to be discovered."On June 11,Ma Yongsheng, general manager of Sinopec Group Co.,Ltd.,Deputy Secretary of the Party Group and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, made the above statement in the open class of state-owned enterprises at Sichuan University.

How many oil and gas resources are there in China?

In July 2018,the Ministry of Natural Resources of China issued the National Circular on Exploration and Exploitation of Petroleum and Natural Gas Resources(2017),announcing the latest situation of domestic oil and gas resources.According to the circular,by the end of 2017,China had accumulated 38.965 billion tons of proven geological reserves,3.542 billion tons of remaining technically recoverable reserves and 2.533 billion tons of remaining economically recoverable reserves.

By the end of 2017,the total proven geological reserves of natural gas in China were 14.22 trillion cubic meters, the remaining technically recoverable reserves were 5.52 trillion cubic meters, and the remaining economically recoverable reserves were 3.91 trillion cubic meters.

By the end of 2017,there were 1009 proven oil and gas fields in China.Among them, there are 734 oil fields and 275 gas fields. It has produced 6.767 billion tons of oil and 1.94 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.

Ma Yongsheng believes that although China's increasing dependence on foreign oil and gas has brought challenges to energy security,China's oil and gas resources are generally abundant, and there is a good resource base for improving China's energy independent security capability.

Ma Yongsheng said that China's petroleum and petrochemical industry is still a sunrise industry rather than a sunset industry. As for the judgment of energy pattern,he believes that clean,low-carbon and diversified are the main trends of future energy development, and the future global energy will gradually change from the current"tripartite confrontation"of coal, oil and gas to the"four-way hegemony"of oil, gas, coal and non-fossil.By 2035,China will change from the current coal-based energy structure to the pattern of coal, oil and gas,and non-fossil energy.By 2050,fossil energy will still be the main energy consumer, accounting for about 70%,of which oil and natural gas account for more than 50%,and coal will be reduced to less than 20%.

Ma Yongsheng's remarks seem to have brought some comfort to China's sense of insecurity in energy, but China's high dependence on foreign oil and gas resources is still a major reality that China must face in energy.

At the 16th Shanghai Derivatives Market Forum held from May 27 to 29,Fu Chengyu, former chairman of Sinopec and CNOOC Group, delivered a speech saying that China's energy security problem should be solved by itself to minimize the problem and risk.

In Fu Chengyu's view,to deal with energy security,we should prepare for two things:first, prepare for short-term oil supply cuts, and through market means, increase foreign cooperation, innovate cooperation methods, innovate reserve methods, and avoid short-term risks.Second, strategically and in the long run, based on China itself, from now on,it will take 10-15 years to achieve basic self-sufficiency in energy, that is,more than 80%of the energy will be supplied by itself.Fu Chengyu suggested that this goal should be formally formulated as a national strategy, and that China has the foundation and conditions to achieve it.

Specifically,China can work in three areas:First, accelerate the development of renewable energy, including the development of electric vehicles,to minimize the consumption of oil in the power transportation system.Second, vigorously develop shale gas.In recent years, the cost of shale gas in China has been greatly reduced, and in this regard,it is hoped that the government will combine institutional and market advantages. The reason is that the government's direct management efficiency is too low,but the complete marketization has become an area without institutional advantages.Third,in the clean coal system,China has made significant technological progress, and the coal used for ultra-supercritical power generation can be comparable to natural gas,but it still needs to further increase investment in this field.
